Born in Alexandria (Egypt) in 1863, Konstantinos Kavafis, the most important of greek modern poets, lived there until his death in 1933. His poems are frequently rooted in everyday life, evoking both the cultural milieu and the historic traditions of the city. Unchanging is his direct approach to reality, free from superficiality and gratuitous artifice, but intense in his ability to penetrate in the deepness of human things. Kavafis has exerced a great influence in contemporary literature. Some of his poems have become models of good poetry and I would like to say more about them in the future. The best verses of Kavafis radiate pure humanity.
